This 6-day residential program is experiential, and designed to introduce the participant to the basic practices of the Himalayan tradition as taught by Swami Rama. The emphasis will be on the first 4 rungs of Ashtanga Yoga (the Royal Path):

  • Yama [5 commitments in relation to you and world:  ahimsa (nonviolence), satya (non-lying), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (walking in the awareness of the Absolute), aparigraha (non-possessiveness)]
  • Niyama [5 observances: shaucha (purity of the body and mind), santosha (contentment), tapas (training of the senses), svadhyaya (self-study), Ishvara-pranidhana (surrender to the higher self)]
  • Asana (posture)
  • Pranayama (Expansion of prana)

The program offers daily classes including hatha yoga, breathing and relaxation practices as preparation for meditation, silence practices, guided meditation practices and individualized instruction in yoga science with the aim to gradually gain independence to eventually be able to do a complete self-guided systematic meditation practice. There is also enough personal time for self-study and for walks along the Ganges.

Three vegetarian meals are provided daily.
